End of Fasching is tomorrow, called Aschermittwoch, Asd Wednesday.

And that Wednesday will be in the week of 7 sundays before Easter - always.

Therefore Faschingsdienstag is never before the 4th of February and never later than the 10th March

Here in Vienna we celebrate that day with the traditional Faschingskrapfen, some people will be costumed the whole day and some will just drink a lot of bubbly wine! It's the heyday of the carneval time!

Gustav Klimt once said about himself:

Austria will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of one of its most famous sons in 2012: Gustav Klimt (1862-1918).

There will be more works by this genius painter and modernist pioneer on show in Vienna than ever before during this special jubilee year. Countless special exhibitions throughout 2012 will give art lovers unprecedented access to this artist’s prolific output.

Klimt spent most of his life in Vienna, and numerous examples of his work, particularly from his early period, are on permanent display in the Austrian capital.

Mozart, Hunters & Vienna's christmas markets

When you're currently in Vienna you'll have 4 more days to enjoy the many christmas markets which are packed full of food stalls selling all kinds of delicious wintery goodness.

Mulled wine may be the most traditional, but you'll definitely should try Jagatee (spell it: jagate) and Punsch.

Let's start with Jagatee - this one really will boost your al level. Its the ultimative austrian skiing drink, hot, and a mix of black tea and pure dark rum with a significant dash of red wine and Obstler (schnaps). Smell it and you'll get drunk!
And by the way: Jagertee is a licensed austrian product, only here to be called like that. Drink it in Germany and you have to call for Huetten- or Foerstertee.
And don't forget Jagatee translated means Hunter's tea! And the hunter in Germany is the foerster! Got it?

Punch is quite famous in Britain too, we all know. So how did it make it's way to Austria?
Easy peasy with a pop star of course! But a star of the 17th century: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart!

It is said, that punch was brought from India to Britain, quickly became very fashionable and Mozart encountered this drink on his travels in England.
No question he was delighted to show off the recipe, when he returned to Vienna.

The word Punsch seems to derive from the indoeuropean "fuenf" (in english five). 5 spices were said to be necessary for a punch: Ingwer, cardamon, cinnamon, cloves and fennel. The same we need to activate our chakras!

The word Pinsch is also familiar with Punsch, but Pinsch in Vienna means getting a 5 in school, according to our school system the fail grade!

Ok guys, that's enough now, come on and let's head to the next christmas market, enjoy the buzz, the smell and the delicious drinks, not to forget the yummy food!

On 6 December the Feast of St Nicholas, the most important of the church festivals in the period leading up to Christmas, is celebrated in Central Europe

One of the oldest traditional customs, it has always been a festivity for children. In Austria, St Nicholas is accompanied by the diabolical figure of Krampus: the saint is benevolent and brings gifts for the children, while the role of the Krampus is to punish childish misdemeanours. Thus gift-giving was not originally associated with Christmas itself, which was a purely ecclesiastical feast; Christmas as a family festivity at which children received gifts is an invention of the Biedermeier era.

St Nicholas’s Day was celebrated in all social classes, including the imperial family: at Court gifts were distributed in the evening of the 5 December, and on 6 December the imperial family attended mass at the Convent of St Nicholas on Vienna’s Singerstrasse, later dissolved by Joseph II.

There exists a well-known depiction of this custom executed by Archduchess Marie Christine, a daughter of Maria Theresa, in 1762. Set in a small family living room, it shows a number of the empress’s children discovering gifts in their shoes under the fond gaze of their parents. This scene has often been adduced as evidence indicating that the Habsburgs led an almost bourgeois life within the inner circle of the family. However, recent research has demonstrated that Marie Christine based her depiction on Netherlandish models, copying them down to the smallest detail. As the furnishings of the room and the way in which the figures are depicted have absolutely nothing in common with ceremonial life at Court, it is now assumed that this scene is a kind of playful attempt to depict the ideal of middle-class family life that was just starting to emerge in the age of Enlightenment. It can be compared to the pastorals of the Rococo era, where the nobility fled the rigid world of court ceremonial for the ostensible idyll of rustic life.

The scene contains a number of details that are still associated with the Feast of St Nicholas. The children’s shoes are filled with sweetmeats and toys; while one of the girls is enjoying her new doll and the little boy in the centre is laying into the sweets, the older boy only has a birch in his shoe, an unwelcome gift from the Krampus …

Not only is the historic center of Vienna on the UNESCO World Heritage list, from this week onwards also Viennas Coffee House Culture has been declared a Cultural World Heritage. Today the around 1000 coffee house owners can harvest what their forefathers have invented and cultivated over the last 3 centuries. So - another reason for this tiny price increase...
Viennas coffee house culture was at its peak about 100 years ago at the beginning of the 20th century, when it turned into a hot spot for leading writers of the time, living and writing there. quite obviously their work was commonly referred to as coffee house literature. Today this culture does not exist anymore, but still coffee houses are an important institution in the every day life of many Viennese. And, with this latest award, it will continue to do so for many more years...

Vienna Streetfestival - August 27th

Once summer has come back to Vienna these days, it is a perfect match for another open air event in the streets of Vienna. Well, it is actually only one street, but a very special one. Ringstrasse, between the Opera and the City Hall will once more be the venue for our biggest outdoor dance floor. Hot weather and hot sounds can be expected from a number of local and international DJs and live performances.

The event is organised as a parade, starting at Vienna State Opera building at 2 pm, and dozens of music trucks can be expected to flood the area with music and party feeling. Of course, no traffic will disturb the party that day, it is pure pedestrian area.

At around 9pm the parade will come to an end, but this is only the time to start over with after-show parties at various locations all over the city.

So be there, it's going to be the one of the hottiest days this summer...

July is over and with deepest regret we have to admit:
since 11 years there was no July with such few sunny days!

But that's life, isn't it!

Drink a Heurigen at the Heuriger! Cheers!

It's raing cats and dogs - yes - this weather these days in Vienna is similar to the UK.

Rainy all day, damp, greyish - all in all, not a summer weather to go to the lakeside or to climb a mountain.

But Vienna has that much to offer, dont mind the weather!

Even if it's damp and not sunny, as long as there are no gusty winds and no rain why not pop into a Heurigen and chill the Viennese way!

The definition Heurigen comes from the german word 'heuer', which means this years'.

We use it for 2 meanings:

- Heuriger can be the wine, which is harvested this year

- Heuriger can be the place, where the winemaker sells his wine

It is a typical Viennese vocabulary, as more in the West of Austria, in Styria for example you would say Buschenschank, if you mean the winesellers place.

That said, Viennese people go to the Heurigen, sit at the Heurigen, often in the private garden of the winemaker and drink Heurigen! Got it?

It was in 1784, when Kaiser Franz Joseph allowed the winemakers to sell their own wine in their own house without any special licence.

Until today the tradition Heurigen is allowed to open for a special period of time during the year only, while selling their Heurigen together with a small variety of traditional and local food.

This is why in a good Heurigen you will find only some small amount of cold, rarely warm food and almost never a menu card.

Sometimes local pastries are sold, which are home-made and delicious. Like this "Kardinalschnitte"

To know when the Heurigen is opened, just look out for the Buschen, a green bunch of pines hanging above the entrance of the Heurigen. If it is out it is "ausg'steckt", meaning the Heurigen sells it's Heurigen. Go for it!

Bon Jovi back to Vienna

After 3 long years they are back!

In 2008 when Bon Jovi visited Austria and showed off their rock talent they chose Ebreichsdorf as their concert location.
Ironically Ebreichsdorf, our home town! This little village south of Vienna, a bit sleepy, for sure very conservative but that comes with a horse racing ground, by courtesy of Frank Stronach, the austro-canadian self-made man.
The trouble was built-in. Excellent concert, but chaotic logistics regarding on and off-transport!

This time the venue seems to be a much better option:
The Ernst-Happel-Stadion in Vienna, THE austrian football stadium. By far not as big as the top stadion of the world with 150.000 seats in Pjonjang and only half of the capacity of Wembley with 90.000, but anyway! And since the EURO 08 the stadion even has a heated green - anyone know, why we need that?

And this Saturday, 22nd of July we expect 35.000 fans to join in!

The Ernst Happel Stadion is a 30min walk along the former "imperial avenue" the Praterallee ..... if you have opted for bluedanubeapartment. Or you take the Ubahn and drop off 3 stops later! It can't be easier!!!

This time we are already fully booked with guests from Germany, who took the chance for a Vienny City trip and mix it up with a hopefully unforgettable Bon Jovi gig just around the corner! Well done!

Did you know, by the way that Jon named the band Bon Jovi because this name was more simple and sounded more like the name of a band than 'Bongiovi'. Jon was born John Francis Bongiovi.

Let's just hope that Richie Sambora doesn't have to comment on our austrian red-white-red flag, as he will see only a grey misch-masch. Never forget he's blind to red, greens and browns!

While the New Jersey boys are currently playing in Athens, obviously the Greeks do have money for the gig, but not for paying their taxes, the final stage setup in Vienna is under way.

And if you fancy to be a paparazzi, hurry up and position yourself at all sides 'n' corners of the Hotel Imperial, where the boys will reside.

Although we try hard, it's not as easy as it was when living abroad, where every little sign felt fit for a report.

Griessnockerln or Frittaten

Again this post is about food!
Meanwhile you will have learned that Vienna is all about food!

This time you can opt between two "Einlagen" for a traditional "Rindsuppe". Ok then, Einlage means the filling of a soup, something to put into the clear broth.
Rindsuppe otherwise means the clear broth, gained by cooking beef with vegetables for ages!
Take a look at my Tafelspitz post and you'll learn more.

Back to the fillings:
Griessnockerln are small dumplings (Nockerl) made of semolina (Griess), eggs and butter. Interestingly there are nations, who absolutely deny semolina in their kitchen. Like the UK, I have learned that british people love that much foreign food, but in gerneral hate semolina.
But trust me, it's absolutely delicious and a must, if eating out in Vienna!

Frittaten are loved by everyone as I gather, as they are simple pancakes with a dash of salt, sliced very finely and put into a tasty soup. Simples!

The funny word Frittate seems to derive from the italian frittata, which means something like an omelette. So we have several words for the english pancake: crepe, palcinta, Pfannkuchen.

But with Frittaten you'll always understand sliced pancakes in soup, if you order Palatschinken you'll get mouthwatering sweet pancakes filled with jam or Nutella. The choice is yours!

Yummy! Enjoy these most loved and most common soup appetizers of the Viennese kitchen!

A Leberkas Semmerl please! Fast Food with Tradition!

Some months ago we did talk about the Wurstsemmel - one of the most traditional fast food in Vienna.
But there are several other mouthwatering, savoury and unique tasty delicacies.

Let's try the Leberkas.
Sometimes also Leberkäs or Leberkäse. In Bavaria you'll find people calling it Fleischkäse.
It's not original Viennese, but it is a Viennese traditional Fast-Food though.
If you translate it word by word: "Leber" means liver and "kas" or "käs" or "käse" meaning cheese.
Ok then, but it has definitely nothing to do with liver and cheese.

This kind of sausage was invented around 1776, not in Austria but in Germany. The name probably derives from the old German: LAB for clotting and QUAS for feast.
But only probably, because there is another saying too:
KAS means in bavarian german some kind of bulky, compact material, in good old Viennese wording "Gatsch"
So, make your choice!

Anyway it makes sense, as the mix of minced pork and beef will be baken in the oven in a rectangular baking-tin.

There are various types: my favourite, whenever I ever eat it, is Käseleberkäs! This one indeed has cheese in it! Kind of confusing, innit?

I recommend to try it as a filling in a good crispy "Semmerl" and the best place to order it is at one of Vienna's typical "Wuerstelstand" which will lead me to my next posting, for sure!

Just a final warning:

1. eat it hot!
2. don't eat it in public transport as it has a strong smell!

And beware! The little snack has approx 650 calories!

- arrive early to guarantee access to the more frontern areas

- finally we suggest to take a picnic-hamper with you and some bottles of wine as food and refreshments are quite lousy

- AND: use the U-Bahn U4 coming from centre of town, get in the first wagon and exit with the elevator at Schoenbrunn stop. You just have to walk 5 more minutes from there

After the official closing hours two actors will guide you through the most attractive rooms, entertaining you with the story of Casanova, a lady-in-waiting will conference with a bavarian visitor. Vienna's High Quality Water

Vienna is well-known for its outstanding water quality.
Our water is of alpine origin coming directly from the springs of the mountains into the taps of Vienna.

The two Viennese spring water pipelines bring the water from highly protected source areas in the alps directly to Vienna, without any mechanical assistance and travelling altogether around 330 km. As the origin of the water in the Alps is far far away from civilisation, it is of excellent quality and ready for drinking from the tap.

Already the Romans recognized the opportunity of supplying Vienna with first class water from the surrounding sources, and built the first water pipelines for Vienna.
In 1873 the first of the two spring water pipelines was established, and as a sign of the water wealth the high jet fountain at the Schwarzenberg Palace in the centre of Vienna was built.

The opening of the second pipeline followed in 1910.

The water travels the way from the source to the tap in around 16 hours. Today 97% of all water consumed in Vienna is coming from the two spring water pipelines. Within Vienna the water is distributed via a pipeline network with a total lenght of over 3,300km. Viennas daily consumption averages at approx. 400,000 cubic metres water.

But let's not forget, we could have had the same hype it life had developed differently.

Karl of Hapsburg, grandson of the last Austrian Emperor, Charles I of Hapsburg, is of our age.

For long time he lived in Anif, a small village outside the city of Salzburg. His residence is called Villa Swoboda and was formerly used by crown prince Rudolf.
Yes, The Rudolf, not the reindeer. But the son of Sisi!
The son, who committed suicide .... all royal families have similar occurencies!

Ok, back to Karl.
He married Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza de Kászon and has 3 children with her. Like many marriages in blue-blooded families not a happy relation.

Since then he has been living in Vienna, his children visit one of the three international schools of Vienna, they submerged in daily routine and live an (almost) normal life.

Their granddad Otto is exiled, their grand-grand-dad Charles I, the last Austrian emperor married exactly 100 years ago!

But we are no monarchy anymore and monarchists are not welcome.

Different to Britain, where monarchy is back to it's peak today!

Grace-Kelly-ish Catherine and Wills gave an excellent couple, parrot-coloured Queen did look impressivley young and the baby girls on the balcony couldn't stand the noise.

"'It's amazing" commented the Queen and indeed it was!

But how different it was 100 years ago!

Old Danube Season Opening - it's boating time!

Today, 27th April, another summer season was opened on the Vienna Old Danube - so what and where is this 'Old Danube'?

It is one of the former river beds of the Danube, located north of todays regulated Danube.
It is one of Viennas uncountable leasure paradises, only 5 kms away from the city centre. With a length of around 8 kms and a superb water quality it is the place to be for swimmers, boaters and sun seekers. A broad variety of bars and restaurants provide a pleasant venue for your lunch or dinner, or just a drink in between - and the nice thing is, most of them can be reached by boat. So, go there, hire a boat, have a drink and enjoy your time.

Directions from bluedanube apartments - again quick 'n' easy. Take the U1 and exit at station 'Alte Donau', then this unique gem lies right in front of you.

Vienna has, like many other major capitals, a place too, where you could feel like an eagle!

Don't miss to make your way up there on a bright day! Either by hiking up or by driving the long and winding road with bus or car. You definitely will not be disappointed. People love this spot not only in summer, but also on New Year's Eve!

Up there you can visit either the Kahlenberg with it's new trendy Coffeeshop and a posh brandnew hotel

or if you like it more private go a little further to Leopoldsberg. Unfortunately you won't find anything to drink or eat there, so bring along your picnic!

Leopoldsberg is 425m high and overlooks Vienna's posh 19th district on one side and Klosterneuburg on the other side. Around 1120 Leopold III built an impressive castle up there, which currently undergoes an owners dispute.

Another Leopold, namely emperor Leopold I, donated the construction of a chapel, after a vow for prevention of the plague in 1679. The finished chapel was destroyed 4 years later by the Turks. But after our siege over the Turkish invaders this chapel was rebuilt in 1693.

It's nice to mention that even Turkish people nowadays find their way up there and seem to remember this part of history!

And on your way back home you may stop in Grinzing, the touristy approach to vinyards, wine and Viennese tradition.

We recommend a stroll through the old cobbled streets!

The Life Ball – A big event with a serious background

'Celebrating the joy of life and the diversity of cultures, Life Ball unites the Viennese ball tradition with opulence, extravagance, glamour, provocation, fancy performances, committed speeches as well as emotional moments' - this is how the Life Ball Organisation describes the ball.

Well, from a Viennese perspective the ball was looked at a bit strangely when it was organized first time in 1993. These days it was a bit of provocation, with an attempt to break taboos and organize a party for a good cause. Today however, it certainly is one of the global top AIDS charity events and also one of the top events in Vienna. From the very beginning the ball has pursued two goals – increase awareness for AIDS and raise money to support AIDS relief organizations.

Tickets are sold out of course, the last chances are small auctions on eBay starting 2^nd May. If you just want to get a glimpse of the spectacle, be there when the opening ceremony is on at the square in front of the Vienna City Hall – it is free, and usually is broadcast on TV as well.

After superstars of recent years like Liza Minnelli, Sharon Stone, Kim Cattrall, Eva Longoria und Whoopi Goldberg it will be Janet Jackson in 2011 to represent amfAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research.

I can't wait for the new wedding in the house of Windsor!

Although I have to admit, that I am still more interested in the Tudors, Henry VIII with his 6 marriages and the according tragedies & affairs.

After living in the UK for some years I became interested in royal history as it shaped society till today and still does - to a certain extent.

Well, we Austrians too had a quite flash royal experience, but people here tend not to be too fond of it anymore.
You'll be seen as a monarchist, old-fashioned, dusty, almost like a political extreme, if you're too much into the royal history. But dear me, we had the Hapsburgs!

And they were at least that posh, fancy and spellbinding like the Tudors, Stuarts or Windsors.
We had similar intrigues and adultries, incest stories, suicides and endless birth-givings.
And, let us not forget, we do have a familiar bond with the Tudors too! No, you do not want to know the details, unless you can follow, when I explain the family tree for 15minutes!

And we even have our Elisabeth who made it into the hearts of the people and is well known throughout the world as Sisi.

Elisabeth, Sisi, (born 1837) a stunning and beautiful woman, was married to Franz Joseph I.
They had 4 children. And like in so many royal families unlucky fortune: their first child, Sophie, died at the age of two, their surviving daughters Gisela (1856-1932) and Marie Valerie (1868-1924) both married and had several children, from whom there are numerous descendants. Their only son, Crown Prince Rudolf, born in 1858, committed suicide together with his mistress, the seventeen-year-old Baroness Mary Vetsera.

The tragedies in her life did influence her spirits, she was a melancholic and sad person, tried to escape with travelling, but never ever overcame the loss of her small child and her son.

Like all tragedies also her life had a sudden unexpected end: she was stabbed to death at the Lake Geneve and reunited in heaven on 10th September 1898.

I just hope, that Will 'n' Kate will be more lucky, I wish them the so much needed heirs, lots of love and over all peace!

Some Austrian trivia about Easter Time .... and more

- NAME
In Austria children believe that the Easter bunny hops over the fields and makes its way to the gardens. The bunny is the official symbol of fertility since the 16th century. But the bunny and the egg are also symbols of the Anglo-Saxon goddess Eastre, after which Easter has been named.
- COLOURS
The customary act of painting eggs is known as Pysanka. In Austria we use to paint the eggs and colour boiled eggs. This custom was taken by the pagans, to whom colours had a special meaning: red for death of Jesus, green for hope, yellow for wisdom, just to name a few.

- HIDE 'N' SEEK
Tradition has it that we hide chocolate eggs, preferably in a garden and children then will have to seek them.
- FOOD
In Austria we love to eat a "Pinze", a deliciouse sweet yeast bread, some smoked ham cooked in a bread dough, called "Osterschinken"

- DECORATION
We also decorate the houses with consecrated pussy willows, decorated with eggs hanging around. Is was tradition in Jerusalem to use palm branches to show your devotedness to Jesus. In absence of palm trees we use willow branches

- TREATS
Chocolate eggs were made for the first time in Europe, in the 19th century. Till date, they remain one of the favorite Easter treats.

Easter is the top-selling confectionery holiday in the west, second only to Halloween.

- STATISTICS
On Easter, 76% people bite off the chocolate bunny ears first, while 5% bite the feet first and 4% eat the tail first.

- SYMBOL
Right from ancient times, the egg has been regarded as a symbol of rebirth in most of the cultures. Eggs, bonfires, candles, lily, cross, palm, bunny and lamb are the most popular symbols of Easter.

- TIME
Just like Passover which is dependent on the phases of the moon and has different dates each year, Easter is also a movable feast. BUT Easter always falls between March 22nd and April 25th.

- HISTORY
The custom of giving eggs at Easter dates back to the time of the Egyptians, Persians, Gauls, Greeks and Romans.

- VATICAN
Every year on Easter, Pope gives his "Urbi et Orbi" (papal address) to the world.

- INTERNATIONAL
Easter is known by different names across the world. Some of them are: Easter (english), Paques (French), Pascua (Spanish), Pasqua (Italian), Pashke (Albanian), Ostern (German), Pascha (Greek), Paaske (Norway), Pasen (Holland) and Pask (Swedish)

- COMMERCIAL
Egyptians were initially the ones who exchanged eggs to symbolize the resurrection of Christ. It was later that the tradition was passed down to early Christians. But it was forbidden by the church to donate eggs. As people loved this habit it was adapted and the eggs where hidden in neighbours garden.

Tafelspitz stands for Plachutta beef

There's nothing more Viennese than the Tafelspitz.
So it's a must to have before you leave Vienna.

It is said that already in the 16th century beef was brought over to Vienna from Hungary and so became an important part of the Austrian Cuisine.

The story goes that good old Kaiser Franz Josef's habit was to eat very hasty and quick. Courts tradition in turn did not allow anyone to eat before or after the emperor has laid back his cutlery. Therefore his entourage often left the meal terribly hungry. In consequence they went to the Sacher, to get what they needed.
Famous Anna Sacher invented a dish, which was able to boil and simmer for ages without loosing quality. This is how the story goes about the creation of Tafelspitz.
Soon also Austrias emperor loved to have his daily beef, be it a part of the tip or the rump.

Tafelspitz is served with spinach, fried egg, potatoe mash and different sauces and gravy.

Tradition has it that you eat the hearty soup served in a copper cauldron together with the Markscheibe on toasted dark bred.
Tafelspitz at its best!

Let's cook ..... Wiener Schnitzel!

I think it's time to focus on food again.
What about cooking the favourite austrian dish? Some years ago I was teaching ladies from all over the world how to make a real good Schnitzel. Let me share with you now this delicious recipe!

This probably is the most traditional Austrian dish you can get.
The original Wiener Schnitzel is made from veal, but it can be made also from chicken, turkey or more popular in Vienna, from pork.
And tradition also has it, that it goes best with potatoe salad and a slice of lemon.

Wiener Schnitzel

1 kg Turkey breast
2-3 eggs
500g breadcrumbs
200g flour
Salt
Oil

Cut the turkey into slices, like you want the Schnitzel to be.
Put the flour in one bowl, the breadcrumbs in another and the mixed eggs in another.
Salt the flour.

Now take each slice of meat and bed it into the flour. After coating it put in the next bowl with the eggs, coat it again well and finally coat it with the breadcrumbs. Get rid of any loose breadcrumbs by pressing them down firmly.

After doing so with all the meat heat up the oil in a big pan. Pour in enough oil, so that the Schnitzel can „swim“ slightly.

Fry them at medium to high heat, very slowly and carefully, otherwise they will burn immediately.

Potatoe Salad

600g potatoes
250 ml beef stock
60g sliced spring onions or leek
6 tbsp vegetable oil
3 tbsp vinegar
Salt, pepper, mustard

Cook the potatoes, then peel them. Cover them with the beef stock immediately after slicing them – add onions—mix together.

Easter Markets are open again in Vienna. Two of the best known in Vienna can be found in the city centre ('Freyung Easter Market') and in front of Schoenbrunn Palace. They are not as big and not yet as popular as Christmas markets in Vienna, but certainly worth a visit.

Freyung Market offers a variety of paschal and not so paschal products at more than 50 stands as well as the biggest egg-mountain in Europe (don't try to climb it!). It is open daily until 25th April from 10am to 8pm.

Schoenbrunn Market is at similar size with around 50 stalls selling the usual suspects, and also offering a nice program for kids (like producing easter rabbits from almond paste - marzipan) as well as for adults (from Jazz performances to Schubert's Missa in C in the lovely Schoenbrunn Chapel). Easter 2011 in Vienna with Classical Music - Osterklang and Vienna Spring Festival

Easter week is probably one of the nicest times to visit Vienna (besides spring, summer, autumn and winter). As the New Year's Concert is long gone by now, it is time to dive into Viennas classical spring. There are (amogst many others) two events which you can enjoy these days - Osterklang in the Theater an der Wien from 15th to 25th April, and of course the Vienna Spring Festival, this year for the twentieth time, from 26th March to 17th May in the Musikverein.

Osterklang will host international stars like Magdalena Kožená, Patricia Petibon and Annette Dasch as well as the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, who will perform the opening. Further highlights will be Antonín Dvořák's Biblical Songs, Josef Suk's Asrael, Franz Liszt's Legend of Saint Elisabeth and the opening opera Dialogues des Carmélites of Francis Poulenc.

The Vienna Spring Festival will be the home for around 70 concerts with one clear highlight: the newly restored organ. It was the star at the opening concert, and you will have alltogether 8 opportunities to listen to the now fourth organ in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein.

Vienna Pop Festival 2011

It is less than a month to go before one of the many music festivals in Vienna is opening its doors - the 'Vienna Popfest'. The open air festival is running from 5th to 8th May, and as at many of these events in Vienna, the entry is free. Although the festival features popular music, the venue is a classic one - the lake stage in front of the baroque St.Charles church in the centre of Vienna. You might be wondering why it is called lake stage - well, other Austrian festivals like Bregenz or Moerbisch have their lake stages too, and as there is quite a big pond in front of the church...

The festival is going to host numerous Austrian artists like rapper Skero, the new vocal sensation Lylit, or political singer songwriter Gustav. There will be around 40 acts, and the final program can be found here from 14th April.

Directions from bluedanube apartments - easy as usual. U1/U2/U4 station Karlsplatz, and a short 5 minute walk from there will take you right into the heart of Austrian popular music.

The story of PEZ started in Austria nearly a century ago.

In 1927 the PEZ candy was invented by Eduard Haas III. It was originally developed as "luxury confectionary for an elegant world" - with valuable peppermint aroma. The product primarily addressed adult consumers at this time. PEZ was a refreshing candy and a cigarette substitute for smokers, and the candies were sold in small tins.

Sometime in the 40ies Eduard Haas III had the idea of creating a PEZ dispenser. Thus in 1949 the PEZ box was first invented: A small plastic candy dispenser shaped like a cigarette lighter.

In the 1950s the dispenser became a best-seller in the United States, with Japan following in the 1970s.

While you may know Belvedere Palace as a stunning historic attraction there is this other, very different kind of attraction. This Garden does not really belong to the grounds of Belveders but is bordering it.

The garden was founded 1754 by Maria Theresia as a "Hortus Medicus“ (a garden for Herbs and medical plants) and has been belonging to the University of Vienna for many years .

While we do not have the mild climate to have gardens like in the UK, the Vienna Botanic Garden has about 10,000 species, all of them a real interesting mix.

The Fu Hu Diary is worth looking at, but even more his clumsy and giggly moves in his home at Schoenbrunn Zoo.

Did you know, that this is the oldest zoo of the world?

1569 the former Katterburg was bought by emperor Maximillian II including a vast hunting area.
73 years later, well let's say one generation later, Schoenbrunn was born on these grounds.
And again one generation later, 1752, a big celebration takes place in the menagerie of Schoenbrunn Palace.
The 31st of July 1752 is the birthday of the Schoenbrunn Zoo.

It's a must, when visiting Vienna and as the sun's out again, you`'ll definitely enjoy a stroll around this history filled park.

Vienna Prater – 2011 opening

Another season for Vienna Prater has started this week. The hibernation period is over, new attractions have been added and existing ones modernized. As usual, the entry is free and most attractions are open from 10 am until after midnight.

It might be a bit too cool these days, but it is good to know that the probably nicest beergarden in Vienna is open again as well after a thorough makeover. The traditional Schweizerhaus is a must for everyone who likes great beer and rich food. And now it is even easier to get there – the Schweizerhaus got its own railway station. Well, not on the Vienna underground network, but on the lovely narrow-gauge track of the Liliputbahn. For those who travel green, the Vienna Prater is offering a new charging point for electric cars and bikes.

And don’t forget, Madame Tussauds is opening soon – April 1^st is the date of wax! 65 wax figures will be awaiting you, the entry fee is reasonable - EUR 18.50 for adults and EUR 14.50 for children.

Vienna City Marathon 2011, April 17

This year Vienna will host the City Marathon for the 28th time. And again, it will become another special marathon. The concept of ‘Marathon Sound of Vienna’ will be responsible for providing the right sound for runners and visitors along 12 kilometres of the course. You will be hearing anything from Mozart and Strauss to modern Pop and Rock.

The World Champion and Olympic Champion Haile Gebrselassie will be there as well to run the half-marathon distance.

Now, with less than five weeks to go, preparation is coming to its peak. This past Sunday, around 900 runners took the chance for another rehearsal. At pleasant 16°C, sun and little wind, the Vienna Prater was the perfect surrounding for the last run of the winter run series. The motivation for the coming training weeks up to the Vienna City Marathon kept an extra thrust, with run desire and spring feelings included.

Fasching is Karneval is Fastnacht is Carneval ... the finale!

Ok, now whatever wording you wanna take, it all means the same.

But FASCHING is the Viennese correct term.

The word Fasching dated back to the 13th century when the words vaschanc and vaschang were used in German language. It seems to derive from „Fastenschank“, meaning the last (alcoholic) serving before the start of lent.

So here we are: tradition has it that today you may have seen some nice "Faschingsumzüge" (carneval processions) alongside the streets. You may also have noticed that in some shops people were costumed, eating "Faschingskrapfen" (see previous post) and drinking bubbly wine!

And whenever you are in Germany during that time, you'll notice that the Krauts are able to celebrate even more jolly and wild this last day of Karneval!

And when in the German centre of Carneval, in Mainz, people say "Helau" as the traditional greeting, in southern Austria, in Carinthia, you'll hear a "Lei, Lei" tonight!

This year I encountered the first stork last weekend!

In the beginning of February!

So, definitely it's time to book your flight too

a gathering of houses on the beaches

of the Neusiedlersee

This lake is a phenomenon,

the second largest steppe lake in Central Europe

has no natural feeder river -

the water level is totaly dependent

on rainfall and hydration

the depth of only approx up to 1.50m

makes it interesting for swimming due it's warm temperatures

surfers enjoy as well as boaters

but beware during storms!

Storks love the place

and as soon as summer is here

you can sit and watch birdlife like nowhere else around!

Vienna Opera Ball - "Alles Walzer"

The Vienna Opera Ball is definitely the highlight of the Viennese Carneval.
I personally think it's the most prestigious and most beautiful society event of the world!

Many many years ago, I attended the ball myself .... as a teenager.
In some upper-class families it is a form of undisputed duty to be a part of the tradition to open the Opera Ball as a Polonaise-dancer.
Well, I did not .....
2011 the 55th Operaball will take place on the 3rd of March.
That's unbelievable late, BUT as the carneval is that long, also this date is scheduled that late in calender.

We've posted earlier that the first ball took place in 1935, for charity purposes.

Nowadays it is the biggest celeb-get-together in Austria: politicians, business men, employers, proms, artistsfrom everywhere international and national.
5.500 guests are expected this year, half of it coming from outside Austria!

In case you somehow have been able to get a ticket, you must have paid a fortune:
Prices for the seating in a box range up to 17.000 EUR. Then you need the normal entrance ticket: per person 230 EUR.
In the end the Opera will gain about 1,1 Million EUR for that night only.
It's said, that this is the only profitable night of the year!

After one night of preparation and re-setting of the whole opera, stage and auditorium, decorated with 40.000 flowers, the opera is transferred into the biggest and poshes dancing stage of the world!

The whole opera building is used that night, from cellar up to the attic. There are several restaurants, bars, a disco, a casino and even a heuriger. The caterin is done by the Wiener K.u.K. Hofzuckerbäckerei Gerstner - without interruption since 1869!

The "Entrée" is fitted with a "heated red carpet", so that the guests do not have to shiver and get frozen tiny toes when moving slowly between the pre-entrance and the opera-entrance. As the main stairways is a bit of a bottleneck, it takes ages until all the celebs make their way. Never to forget the paparrazzi!

Each year the Opening of the Ball is choreographed and supervised by a different Austrian dancing school.
This year for the first time ever, it will be a woman, who is in charge for this organisational part, Juanita Hieble, who opened the ball herself in 1987.

160 couples coming from all over the world will have a white gawn, a little crown, some flowers and a black dress coat to fit in the tradition.

The opening ceremony, kind of a Quadrille, is followed by Johann Strauß' Waltz and secret hymn "An der schönen blauen Donau" or Blue Danube Waltz.
This is the moment when you hear the words: "Alles Walzer" "Everyone waltz" - and the ball is officially opened!
At midnight there is again a midnights-Quadrille and 5am spot on the ball is over after the orchestra played these 3 "hits":

- Blue Danube Waltz,
- Radetzkymarsch
- "Brüderlein fein" from the play "Der Bauer als Millionär" (Ferdinand Raimund -1826)

The Faschingskrapfen - Vienna's answer to McDonalds Bagel

Hmmmmmm, can you smell it? Can you feel the delicious texture? And after the first bite the wonderful jam melts on your tongue!

This is a Faschingskrapfen!

And Faschingskrapfen belong to Vienna's Carneval like cucumber sandwiches to tea time!

This wonderfully sweety tastes that good, that you can't have only one. You'll get addicted to a second. Then you need a third, as "all good things come in three". And finally you will take a fourth, as it's festive season, so you're alowed to bottle in whatever you can.

So often they come already packed as 4 - easy to go.

You can buy them everywhere these days: in the bakery, in the supermarkets, in the coffee shops .... just beware of one thing: They must be absolutely fresh!

As soon as they get more than 2 hours fresh air - the taste is gone!

So ask for their date of birth, buy them, eat them - even on the road!

The history about them?
Ok, you know, there's always a good story - so here it is:

A Viennese "chef" of the king's court, named Cäcilie Krapf, is said to have invented those fatty sweets.
She had her bakery in the Naglergasse in the 1st district.
This delicious sweet delicacy was served at the Congress of Vienna, you remember the G6 meeting, where they danced more than they disputed.
The lady in question, Mrs Krapf, nicknamed Cilli, created the "Krapfen" for one of the big balls in the Hofburg - those dough scoops, which have to be baked in oil and be filled with sweet apricot jam.

It is said that only in the year 1815 around 10 millions of Faschingskrapfen where eaten.
WOW! Can you imagine the number of calories!

Sorry, I have to go ..... and eat my Faschingskrapfen .... can't wait any longer

Ahhh, opposite the bluedanube apartment, at the supermarket chain HOFER, the Krapfen are delicious .... and come as 4!

Dialect vs Accent - German vs Austrian

Guys, the festive season is almost over, so it's high time to report about some trivia.

I've just came over a nice discussion about dialects ... or is it accents?

Well, how would you call it, if someone speaks obviously German, but changes the pronounciacion of words that much, that it's quite difficult to follow. And uses different words at all. Is this dialect or just a strong accent?

I remember when living in London, it was quite interesting to listen to the different kinds of "English".

The Received Pronounciation (RP) varies from Cockney quite a lot, a Liverpudlian is sometimes quite difficult to understand, as well as someone from the northern countries.

And don't forget Wales, where Welsh English is spoken, which again differs from the Welsh language!
And the wonderful Scottish accent! What a pleasure, when you finally grasp the words!
And let's not forget about all the celtic parts that made it into English ...

Oh, last but not least Anglish .... I'd rather say Germanglish - yes, this is a mix between English and German words! Like "Rucksack" or "Misch-Masch" or "Zeitgeist".

But back to the difference between German and Austrian language and Viennese dialect!

You are right, basically it's the same language. But there are a lot of words which are completely different.

Interestingly the Austrian language and its dialects has adopted lots of words from Italian, French, Slavic and Yiddish. And these words were the basics for the later dialect. Like "Trottoir" (Gehsteig-pavement) or "Lavoir" (große schüssel-big bowl) or "Kombinege"(Unterkleid-lingerie) - funny even the Brits need to borrow a french word!

These examples have almost died out - means, you will only hear them spoken by people 40+. Seems that dialect changes .....
No wonder, 44% of all pupils in Austria do not have German as their mother tongue.
Maybe that's not so bad at all, as dialect and language and accent are therefore in a constant progress!

Did you know that in Vienna there were 3 different dialects: the "Schönbrunner-ish", the "Floridsdorfer-ish" and the "Meidlinger L", as people pronounced the L in a very specific way.

New Year's Concert in Vienna

We have the most extraordinary and unique New Year's Concert, taking place every year here in Vienna. The "Wiener Philharmoniker" is definitely the best orchestra for waltz music in the world!

Since 1941 this concert takes place every year and is broadcasted in 70 countries of the world.

Vienna's Silvester (New Year's Eve) Traditions

Ok, then, maybe you'll know already where to spend that last evening of the year BUT do you also know how and what to do? Apart from drinking?

The fact is: people in Vienna like it loud and traditional and with lots of beer and wine!
But here is the chronological way of the traditions/custom - no party will do without these!

Pummerin - Chime of St. Stephens Cathedral
The first "thing" you will hear in the city centre, on radio and on tv are the chimes of the huge bell of St. Stephens Cathedral. Did you know, that the bell is made out of cannonballs?

Walzer - Waltz:
In Vienna you waltz into the new year and of course it is the one and only waltz: the Donauwalzer - The Bluedanube Waltz. Everywhere in Vienna and Austria you will hear the sounds of this hymn - starting immediately after the chimes of the Pummerin

Feuerwerk - Firework

spot on and simultaneous to the Pummerin and the waltz (sounds a bit stressful!) the firework will start all over Vienna, unfortunately with the so much forbidden firecrackers

Glücksbringer - Lucky charms

you can buy those small little things starting from about tomorrow on every corner of the streets. A pigs, fish, chimney sweeper, shamrock, coin - they are all symbols of luck. You'll give them to your friends in the first minutes of the new year. They will put those lucky charms in their purse or wallet and carry it around all year round

Fischbiskotten - sponge fingers in fishy form
You eat them, well actually you bite them at midnight - BUT you have to bite from the tail's side! It will bring good luck to you

Bleigießen - melting lead:
This is the absolute Top of the traditions and an Must-do on any kind of party.
You melt little lead figures in a spoon on New Year's Eve to see what the year ahead will bring...a form of fortune-telling. The spoon full of liquid lead is then poured into cold water. Your future is then read from the shapes formed in the wate. This is done in the early hours of the new year

1. Kahlenberg:
a small hill outside Vienna, overlooking the town.
Take Bus 38A, leaving from Heiligenstadt U-Bahn Station. The 25min ride takes you through the posh part of Vienna up to Kahlenberg.
Enjoy up there the midnight fireworks over Vienna. Wrap up warm and take some bottles of champagne with you!

2. Riesenrad:
Take a ride on Vienna's famous landmark "The Riesenrad" - "The ferris wheel" and enjoy the unique panorama! Nearby is a New Year's Party too!

Again take the Bus 38A (see above) and take the stop Cobenzl-Parkplatz after a 17min ride.
There is the Oktogon and the green around it. Party either inside with a gala buffett (hurry up - booking in advance necessary: himmel@himmel.at ) or outside on the green with Gulaschsoup, Gluehwein and open fire - entry free.
In any case wrap up warm again, be happy and watch the stunning fireworks all over town!

New Year Trail in Vienna

Now, that one party is over, Christmas, we can prepare for the next big thing!
New Year's Eve! "Silvester" as the locals say!

If you spend that night in Vienna you should take a walk into the city centre, as this is one huge stage.
Thousands of visitors are attracted every year to the trail with entertainment and food starting already around 2pm.

If you're keen on dancing, you can brush up your dancing skills guided by an expert, who will ensure, that you are able to waltz into the new Year.

A whole bunch of stages offer music of different styles and performances all over the city centre. Everywhere food stalls with traditional Viennese and international delicacies.

Until midnight everyone lingers around, drinking, dancing and singing ..... waiting only for the countdown to go. And then: 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 ..... New Year is here! The chimes of the Pummerin, the old bell in St. Stephens Cathedral, will sound, surrounded by fireworks all over the town.

The party goes on on the street until 2am and then lots of bars are still open to party until early morning.

If you want to continue with the tradition, somehow you must stay fit, as at 11am the New Year's Concert on New Year's day is an absolute must .... we'll report on that tomorrow!

Guys, the countdown is on .....

The nervosity of the children is unbeatable, the hectic athmosphere of stressed parents is quite contagious and the despair of last-minute-shoppers adds some special flavour to this so typical said-to-be time of calmness.
It's christmas ... and somehow, this job's always completed last minute.

The evening of the 24th of December is the heyday of Christmas here in Austria. All generations get together and it's a big family event. A dinner is beeing served, after mothers prepare the whole day. Traditionally you will find fish or goose on the menu. Some opt for cold delicacies like salmon. In any case children can't wait, that the "Christkind" comes, looking like a fairy. They perk up their ear's not to overhear the sound of a tinkerbell. As soon as they hear it, they are aloud to enter the sitting room, where they will find the big surprise: a wonderfully decorated christmas tree with lots of presents beneath. The long wait is over .....

And if you're here in Vienna over Christmas and want to go out for dinner on the 24th then we advise to check for open restaurants in advance. More and more of good ones stay open and breack with the old tradition of family celebration. This link should help you:

It's so wonderful to be in Vienna right now!

The smell of Punsch and Gluehwein in front of Schoenbrunn Palace, crisp air, christmas music wherever you go, a huffle and shuffle and loads of delicious food.

Wherever you go you'll find stunning lights, like here in Rotenturmstrasse, "Redtowerstreet"

or when you walk from St. Stephens Cathedral towards the Graben.

And as a small christmas present: here's a very special sightseeing recommendation:

visit the Strudelhofstiege. With snow and in the evening it's so romantic, you don't wanna leave!

It's maybe the most famous Art Nouveau building of Vienna. Don't miss it out these days!

Krampus makes his way through town

If you're just on your way through Vienna or the outskirts, beware!
The Krampus is around and looks for bad boys and girls!

Krampus is a mythical creature. In Austria tradition has it, that Krampus accompanies St. Nicholas during the Christmas season, warning and punishing bad children, in contrast to St. Nicholas, who gives gifts to good children.

Small children are indeed terrified by this creature - what a way to educate them!

In some areas Krampus comes in a group, means they are then called Perchten, as they are so ugly.
You will hear them from far away already with the noise of rusty chains and bells.

The word Krampus originates from the Old High German word for claw (Krampen).

But tomorrow the spook is over and we all wait for the next tradition: the visit of St. Nicolaus!

Arts and Crafts at Vienna Christmas Markets - Am Hof

This fine arts and crafts market is located in the most traditional market area of Vienna. As early as in the 13th century markets were held here, what to day is ‘Am Hof’. In the 16th century this huge yard was home to the Thomasmarket. Nowadays, since 2003, this Chrismas market is run by an initiative to support local arts and craftsmen, and that’s why the focus is on traditionally crafted, high quality products. It is a unique opportunity for the producers, to present their work to a wider audience. Although the market is located in the very centre of Vienna, the visitor can expect a familiar atmosphere with harp music and fine home made mulled wines and punch.

The Adventkalender

In Germany and Austria there is an old tradition: the Adventkalender.
Again it dates back to around 1851, when first a self-made Adventkalender was mentioned.

Already since weeks you will find kind of boxes in shops where upon typical scenery is printed.
Children will find such an Adventkalender somewhere in their home from tomorrow morning, the 1st of December.

The commercial ones are filled with better or cheaper chocolate. The type of chocolate which is used for bunnies and egg at Easter time. Now they are angels and demon... ups, no!

Every day from now on one "Fenster", window, can be opened and yet another day has passed on the way to Christmas!

Meanwhile this tradition has made it to other countries too. Whilst 5 years ago in the UK these Adventkalender were almost inexistent, you can buy them now at all the Asdas, Sainsburys and Tescos! Maybe even branded with Little Britain or X Factor - who nows?

Creative moms like me, with grown up children replace the chocolate ones and diversify this tradition.

Advent, Advent .....

Last weekend the traditional "Adventzeit" started. Children will say:

"Advent, Advent, ein Lichtlein brennt, erst eins, dann zwei, dann drei, dann vier,

dann steht das Christkind vor der Tür."

(Advent, Advent, a candle burns, first one, the two, then three, then four,

and then the Christkind has arrived)

This is the time before Christmas when Christian people are in expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of Christmas. "Adventus" comes from the Latin and means "coming".

It is also the time when traffic jams are starting to build up, often mixed with weather chaos and huge queues in front of the cashiers. And the time, christmas lighting is turned on and mulled wine is drunken excessively.

And time of the "Adentkranz".
This is a green spruce wreath decorated with 4 candles and some christmasy schnick-schnack.
Either you buy a ready made wreath or you buy pine bundles and with lots of patience you manage to get a wreath, pin in the candles and use your creativity to match nice items for decoration. It will take a good hour to finally have the wreath ready.

The story goes that the evangelic priest Johann Hinrich Wichern had a wooden wreath with 24 candles, 4 big ones for the 4 sundays and 20 "normal" ones.
Each day one more candle was lit so that finally on the 24th there were 24 candles enlighting the church. Each day the light was brighter and prepared everyone for the coming of Christ as the "Light of the World".

Nowadays it's a big business for the flower shops and each year prices increase and quality decreases.
So, if you dont want to spent 50 euro, the better, you make a DIY wreath.

Austrian families will have had lit up the first candle last sunday. And every sunday the light will become brighter, with the increased number of candles burning. So, wherever you go in Vienna, watch out for the green wreaths.

Unfortunately you will not find it in bluedanube apartment as we decided to put safety over tradition. Tradition also has it that many of the wreaths start small fires .....

Snow was Coming to Town

It started with a snow storm (picture from Schoenbrunn Palace) in the early evening hours...

... and the final result were a few milimetres of snow (picture taken at 8.30 pm close to bluedanube apartments). Much less than expected, but a start, after all...

Seems that the weather forecast is correct this time... it started snowing in the Western parts of Austria, so it is just a question of hours until Vienna will become white. It is a nightmare for some, a dream for others... So, if you are planning to use your car under such conditions, be prepared for chaos (at least during the first days until everyone has digested the unexpected surprise) and don't move your car if you haven't got snow-tires and strong nerves. If you are more the walking type of person, wrap yourself into some warm stuff and enjoy - and hurry up, because, as usual at this time of the year, the snow will not last very long and melt away again soon.

And, of course, bluedanube apartments are well prepared, it will be warm and cozy when you return back to the apartment after a nice winter walk in town.

Arts and Crafts at Vienna Christmas Markets - Belvedere

The Belvedere Palace is another famous location in Vienna which hosts a Christmas market. Without a doubt, the gardens and the buildings are worth a journey. In addition, during Christmas time many visitors are attracted by this nice and familiar Christmas village. It offers a combination of the baroque Belvedere Palace, flooded with light, the garden plants and the Christmas atmosphere. Approximately 50 market stalls offer ornate handicraft products as well as culinary delights. Local and international choirs and gospel groups are performing traditional Christmas music in the Chrismas village. Children will enjoy the nostalgic carrousel and a lot of surprises.

Directions for visitors staying at bluedanube apartments: S-Bahn to Suedbahnhof and then either walk down or take the tram D. Use the entrance to the garden at 39, Prinz Eugen Strasse . Approx 20 minutes.

Vienna Opera Ball ... and 150 Other Balls

Now, that we have successfully approached the carnival season and the christmas market season, Vienna prepares also for the ball season. As you see, Viennese people love to enjoy these chilly and quite depressing months of the year by dancing and drinking!

Combine a stylish gown with glamour, elegance, waltz and lots of champagne and indulge in society like the emperors, queens and kings did. Head out for a traditional ball in Vienna.

Meanwhile the season stretches from November to August. Business over tradition! Traditionally the ball season ends on "Faschingsdienstag" the day before "Aschermittwoch. In 2011 this will be the 8th and 9th March then.
"Faschingsdienstag" is the Mardi Gras in France or the Pancake-day in Britain. And the following day is the Ash Wednesday. But this is another story, we'll report on that later.

It is said, that there are approx 150 balls taking place in Vienna. But only a handful are the very traditional ones. It has become custom that groups of people started to organize a ball to party within their community. Let us have a look what kind of "newer" balls there are on offer:

The absolute star of the balls is the Vienna Opera Ball.
Taking place on 3rd of March 2011, as usual on the last Thursday of the Carnival Season, this ball started in 1935, but with its roots dating back to 1814.

It is the most well known ball all over the world and attracts almost 5000 visitors every year. "Expect glamour, elegance and timeless tradition" as it is said on the website. And never forget: it's the only ball taking place in the State Opera of Vienna, an indeed stunning location.

All balls are "opened" with a ceremony, where young couples enter in a Debutante Procession which finally mounts in a beautiful waltz with the traditional words: "Alles Walzer" - "All may waltz"
Don't miss these balls, there are so many, you certainly will find one while staying in Vienna.
If you don't have your dancing gown with you or your black suit, no worry, you can buy or rent it. Usually you should be able to purchase tickets for the balls even a few days before the event. Or you skip the "opening" and sneak in later. The only exception probably is the opera ball. You have to plan well ahead and try to get tickets long time before!

Arts and Crafts at Vienna Christmas Markets - Schloss Schoenbrunn

If you want to combine one of Viennas top locations with romantic Christmas feelings, the Schoenbrunn Christmas market is the perfect place to go. Located in front of the palace, the advent village is providing an unforgettable atmosphere. It feels more relaxed and less crowded than other markets in Vienna. Around 70 exhibitors are offering anything from local hand crafted artifacts to fancy Christmas tree decorations, made of various materials like wood, glass, stone, and pottery. No need to leave hungry or thirsty as you can enjoy a lot of specialties like fine Austrian wines as well as punches, mulled wine and tea specialties, including non-alcoholic and sugar-free varieties. Gingerbread and Christmas biscuits go well with these fine drinks, but if you are not so much into sweets, also soups and stews, baked potatoes, raclette, pasta and different kinds of sausages are available.

Lady Gaga in Vienna

Yes, she's here ...

Lady Gaga arrived yesterday and will have her showdown on Thursday, tomorrow, when she will appear on stage with her latex outfit, kicking off the "Monster Show". The "Stadthalle" in Vienna is sold out since ages. Quite a bargain for international visitors: the highest tickets were 104 euro, while you could maybe just imagine but definitely hear her for 34 euro only too, located somewhere in the big venue.

Lady Gaga stays only a minutes ride away from our bluedanube apartments in Vienna in the famous "Ringstrasse" where a lot of posh Hotels can be found.

It is said, that she wants to do a tourist tour through Vienna, as she loves to see historic buildings and culture. So you may be lucky to meet her in "Schoenbrunn Palace" or in one of the grand Museums. Today she told the press, that she want so see "The Kiss" by Gustav Klimt.

Ah, yes, by the way, she is also recording .... and that she is on stage too, did I mention that before?

And know what? She will enjoy Vienna with her parents! Yes, what a lovely daughter!

So if you see Lady Gaga in Vienna, trust me, no fake ... it's definitely her!

11th Nov - Martinmas Goose or watch out for lanterns

On November 11th we do not only celebrate the opening of Carneval as you may have read in a previous post but also the feast of St. Martin, also known as Martinmas!

St Martin of Tours, born 317, started out as a Roman soldier, was baptized as an adult and became a monk. It is understood that he was a kind man who led a quiet and simple life. The most famous legend of his life is that he once cut his cloak in half to share with a beggar during a snowstorm, to save the beggar from dying of the cold.

And there are 2 nice traditions here in Austria on this and the following days:

1. eating goose

2. children celebrating St Martin and wandering around with self-made lanterns, singing along a very traditional song (see below)

The goose is actually a symbol for St. Martin himself since it is said that a honking goose revealed his hiding place, after he hid to avoid being made bishop of Tours!

So go out to restaurants and ask for the delicious "Martinigansl". You will be more than happy to try out the roasted goose, which comes along with red cabbage and potatoe dumplings. If you are very lucky the goose is even filled with a flavoury mix of chestnuts and bread dumplings. Yummy!

Better to eat it during day than in the evening and definitely add a lot of good red wine!

You will find a lot of excellent reatsurants near our bluedanubeapartment in Vienna. Worth a try is the "Kuchldragoner" in the old part of Vienna city, just a 5min u-bahn drive away from our apartment. Better to book a table and mention that you are keen on the goose! And maybe a last tip: walk home! It's said to be good for the goose in your belly!

And if you are around in the early evening on that day, you probably will encouter kindergarden-children walking around proudly with their self-made lanterns, singing and re-telling the story of St Martin

Carnival in Vienna - the largest quadrille of the world is expected on 11/11

At 11:11 am on 11/11 a new carnival season is beginning. In Vienna, it is not just a beginning, it will be a huge outdoor dancing event. 3,000 dancers are expected to perform the largest quadrille of the world. Organised and hosted by the Viennese dance schools, all Vienna will be dancing into carnival season. Everyone is invited to join in at the Graben, one of the avenues leading to Stephansplatz. With the assistance of professional dancers everyone will be able to enjoy this early morning waltzing time. It is about fun and joy, not perfection, they say...

As it is tradition in carnival season, all participants will be offered ‘Faschingskrapfen’ (kind of jam-filled doughnuts) after the event.

So, if you are lucky enough to be in the area, join in and enjoy!

Arts and Crafts at Vienna Christmas Markets - Spittelberg

The Christmas market at the Spittelberg in Vienna was an insider location many years ago, as it was not so crowded as other markets and offered different types of arts and crafts products. It seems to be the fate of insider locations that they do not stay that secret over time and sometimes become large events. Nowadays hundreds of thousands of visitors come here every year and their number is still increasing. But still, the initial approach of attracting both children and adults during the days before Christmas it kept its social character, supporting charity organizations. Children can find a lot of additional attractions like regular visits of Santa Claus, and the Nikolo (St. Niclas) also passes by on the 6^th December. In a workshop children can assist the Christ Child preparing the gifts.

The craftwork sold here is very local, as the area itself is home to many arts and crafts shops throughout the year. More than 100 exhibitors are providing the perfect atmosphere for a nice and crisp winter evening in Vienna, before heading on to the many restaurants in the area. The market can be reached easily with the U2 and the U3.

The first 5 days of November

Some days ago we welcomed November, as you did as well certainly ... wherever you are in the world.

So what did you do? Did you celebrate? Did you party? Did you grieve for somebody? Have you been scared? Did you fire rockets?

Now, depending on where you live, it might have been a different outcome.

In Vienna we started off with the newly celebrated habit of Halloween. Trick'n'treat has found it's way to our capital. But apart from small children, who have mistaken this tradition with Fasching, the "Viennese way of Carneval", nobody really favours to dress up spooky.

Shops love it, as they can do a proper decoration and pumpkin sellers are able to sell the biggest pumkins nowadays. In the Kindergarden traditional pumpkin candle making is a nice crafts adventure.

Although the Celts did pass through Vienna, their celtic Samhain tradition did not make it into the hearts of Austrian people.

And you will find no creativity with bloody and half-alive costumed people, no corpse-like dressed ladies and no Draculas will be found en masse. No haunted acitivites, no ghost appearances in the old palaces or manor houses.
In London this evening is one more time a great occasion for party and drinking time and of course THE evening for all ghosts - and believe me, they are there, in England!

So on a 31st of October don't expect anything special in Vienna - apart from our cultural evening scene!

The 1st of November is The All Hallow's Day or All Saints Day which has been adopted by the catholic church to be THE day for remembering their many holy people. And this day is not only a public holiday in Vienna, but tradition has it, that people use this day and the following one to visit all their once-beloved ones, the ones beneath the surface!

So expect huge traffic congestions all around the cementaries and graveyards. It also will be difficult to find anything else in a flower shop than wreaths.

And logically there are no bonfire nights like in London, where on the 5th of November, Guy Fawkes, the first British terrorist, is remembererd with lots of fireworks around this day. Maybe you can recall it: that was the guy who wanted to blow op the british parliament ... in 1605. By the way .... some linguists think that the word "guy" derives from Guy Fakes!

Arts and Crafts at Vienna Christmas Markets - Karlskirche

The arts and crafts market in front of the baroque Karlskirche (St. Charles Church) at the Karlsplatz has been established as an alternative to the large Christmas markets in the city of Vienna, it has its emphasis however within the artistic range. There are products, which one can but from artists, like hand made candles and ceramics as well as articles made of wood. Of course you can find also many products for the everyday life and a lot of gift ideas for Christmas. However, it is not art alone which had made the market in front of the Karlskirche so popular. The famous church and its surroundings provide a beautiful environment to enjoy some local culinary specialities and of course the ubiquitous Gluehwein (mulled wine) and similar ‘dangerous’ drinks together with some Christmassy background music. The market exists since 1993 and was a success from the beginning.

Holiday!

26 of October as the Austrian National Day - this celebration goes back to the beginnings of the 2nd Republic after WW II.

After the end of the War, Austria was occupied by the four Allied powers (Soviet Union, United States, Great Britain and France) and divided into four zones. With their consent an Austrian government was elected democratically, but every legislative regulation or political action required their consent.

In spring 1955 discussion about a State Treaty ending this occupation was finally brought to conclusion:
the Austrian State Treaty was signed on 15 May 1955 in Vienna's Schloß Belvedere (maybe one of the most moving events in Austrian history) and entered into force on July 27 1955.

Why now October 26?

Well, this day marks the first day on which the last foreign troops left the Austrian territory; therefore de facto the first day Austria was again an independent and sovereign country.

But it took 10 more years for the parliament and the politicians to decide which day should be the "National Day of Austria".
They had the choice of 4 dates:

- 12 Nov - birth of the first republic (1918)
- 27 Apr - interim austrian state government (1945)
- 15 May - signing of State Treaty (1955)
- 26 Oct - first day without any foreign troups and passing of the law on permanent neutrality

This is it!
185 years ago, on 25th October 1825, on a similar rainy days as today, Johann Strauss was born.

He was one of THE Austrian composers, "the king of waltz". As so often he should become a banker rather than a musician, but as soon as his talent was recognized there was no way to stop him. He composed over 500 waltzes, quadrilles and polkas and came up with quite famous operettas, like The Fledermaus.
But maybe his most famous work was The Blue Danube, the secret hymn or anthem of Austria.

The Blue Danube is still one of the most recognized songs in the world - maybe together with Imagine or Yesterday.

This is also the song, which is played very first on broadcast and TV when the New Year starts!

bluedanubeapartments took over the name because we identify with one of the biggest stars the country has every produced - his music is loved for almost 200 years! What a star!

And this star lived a celeb's life: married three times, even had to give up the austrian nationality to marry the third time and all marriages have been without children! And in the end, after his death, his only surviving brother distroyed much of his work - they agreed to this pact beforehand - whoever outlived the other, will destroy the work, so that no one ever can claim that work for them. Obviously the copyright issue wasn't solved yet!

Anyway, pneumonia made him kick the bucket with 73. But his music is fully alive!
